A THIRD EDITION COLOURED BY MATURITY
After the launch of the event in 2010, and a fine confirmation of its
progress in 2011 with 16 crews at the start, the third edition of the
Normandy Channel Race is set to be synonymous with maturity and the pursuit
of development. It will run from 30 August to 9 September, with the race
start on 2 September.
Thomas Ruyant and Tanguy Leglatin, followed a year later by Tanguy de
Lamotte and Sébastien Audigane, have already etched their names on the
event’s grand Trophy and the standard of these initial winners augurs very
well for the calibre of the future competition in this latest edition.
Well positioned in the 2012 calendar, following on from the Solidaire du
Chocolat, the finish of the Global Ocean Race and the Quebec- St Malo, the
Normandy Channel Race will provide the Class 40 crews with a demanding
course encompassing the English Channel and the Irish Sea.
On a competitive level, the year’s major Class 40 meeting of the Channel and
northern Europe is continuing in the same vein as previous editions, with an
identical 1,000-mile course between Normandy and the English and Irish
coasts, with race management provided by Sylvie Viant.
The Notice of Race and registration are accessible on the website
www.normandy-race.com with an initial
settlement date of 1st March 2012 offering the first entries a considerable
reduction. It is worth pointing out here that the crews completing the
Quebec – St Malo will be able to be berthed in Caen free of charge once the
race finishes.
Due into port by the evening of Wednesday 29 August, the Class40s will be
berthed in the Bassin St Pierre at the centre of Caen, where an
entertainments village will open on Thursday morning. The fleet will then
leave town and head down the Caen canal in procession early afternoon on
Sunday 2 September, before heading out to sea at 1700 hours local time. In
fact, this parade has now become a firm favourite in the event programme
after drawing several thousand people to the banks of the canal and the
locks in Ouistreham this year.
In 2012 there is an even more packed schedule of entertainment for the
weekend of the finish thanks to the event being twinned with the PRESQU’ILE
EN FETE festivities and its village in the port. Indeed, this ensemble of
cultural and sporting entertainment accommodated no less than 40,000 people
in 2011. As such the returning crews certainly won’t go unnoticed!
As with previous years, the programme set up to receive the French and
international skippers will include a whole range of architectural beauties
and Norman gastronomy, culminating with a grand crew supper on Friday 31
August.
Furthermore, with strong ties to the local area, the Normandy Channel Race
is once again benefiting from the support of the major public and economic
protagonists, who have been heavily involved in the event for several years
now (Town of Caen / Lower-Normandy Region/ Department of the Calvados / Caen
la Mer conglomeration / CCI Caen –Ouistreham).
Finally, the event is also a medium to encourage development of the nautical
network in the area. This is particularly true for the local V2D1 boatyard,
which has earned great renown in the offshore racing world and is now a
foundation stone for the Class 40 both locally and in the English Channel.
And so it is that the international openness epitomised by the Normandy
Channel Race continues, with a repeat of 2011’s competitive line-up of over
50% international teams certainly on the cards.
First deadline for registration: 1st March 2012.
