PUMA OCEAN RACING WELCOMES DEDICATED MEDIA CREW MEMBER ABOARD FOR VOLVO
OCEAN RACE 2011-2012
BOSTON, MA (April 20, 2011) -- PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG
Propulsion is pleased to announce the appointment of Arden Oksanen to the
Media Crew Member (MCM) role aboard PUMA’s Mar Mostro for the Volvo Ocean
Race 2011-2012.
Oksanen, age 36 from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA, is the final member of
PUMA’s 11-strong sailing team and completes the line-up for the Volvo
Ocean Race 2011-2012 that starts in Alicante, Spain in November. The PUMA
Ocean Racing crew has been carefully crafted to combine the utmost skills,
physical endurance and competitive spirit as the sailors prepare to race
39,000 nautical miles, day and night, over nine months.
Oksanen hails from the worlds of extreme skiing and kayaking with 14 years
experience in producing, directing, shooting and editing action sports
programming. New to sailing but no stranger to the world of adventure
sports, he will put his sea legs to the test using his expertise as an
adventure storyteller to produce video, image and audio content of the
PUMA Ocean Racing team.
Oksanen has previously been the recipient of Kayak Magazine's No. 1 and
No. 2 best kayak films of all time awards, in addition to numerous other
industry accolades. As PUMA’s MCM, Oksanen’s primary duty will be as the
boat’s cameraman, editor, director, writer, photographer and radio
correspondent. He will be tasked with capturing all of the on-board action
from remote waters and broadcasting it via the latest technology to
computers and living rooms around the world through the PUMA sailing
website www.puma.com/sailing, www.VolvoOceanRace.com and social media
platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Flickr). As stipulated by the
Volvo Ocean Race regulations, MCMs aboard the Volvo 70s are not permitted
to assist in sailing; however, in addition to his media responsibilities,
Oksanen will be pressed into duty in the boat’s “galley,” preparing meals
for the PUMA Ocean Racing crew during each race leg.
Talking about his new role Oksanen explained, “I live on the ‘buy the
ticket, take the ride’ philosophy. I’m a mountain guy, so the opportunity
to race around the world with world class sailors, challenge myself and
capture the story as it unfolds was a once in a lifetime adventure I
couldn’t pass up.”
Ken Read, one of the world’s most accomplished sailors and PUMA Ocean
Racing Skipper said,
“I think even Arden would admit that we are taking a bit of a flyer with
him as our MCM choice. Imagine if you wanted to start running
competitively and your first race was the Boston Marathon? This is going
to be a heck of an experience for Arden, a true rookie to sailing. But, he
is anything but a rookie to the world of extreme sports programming. We
are totally psyched to give sailing a bold new look, and the entire team
welcomes Arden with open arms. His position is critical to PUMA, the Volvo
Ocean Race and sailing in general.”
The Volvo Ocean Race is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human
endeavor and is widely known as the ‘Everest of Sailing.’ During the nine
months of the Volvo Ocean Race, which starts in Alicante, Spain, in
November 2011 and concludes in Galway, Ireland, in July 2012, the teams
will sail over 39,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas
via Cape Town, South Africa; Abu Dhabi, UAE; Sanya, China; Auckland, New
Zealand; around Cape Horn to Itajaí, Brazil; to Miami, Florida, USA;
Lisbon, Portugal, and Lorient, France, finishing in Galway.
The PUMA Ocean Racing team is based in Newport, Rhode Island, USA.
Cumulatively, the management and sailing team for PUMA Ocean Racing shares
a level of success difficult to match with 22 Volvo Ocean Race entries and
20 America’s Cup editions. Collectively, the core team holds seven 24-hour
mono hull speed records and has won the Around the World Race seven times.
