The Route du Rhum 2002: Press Release N° 32

Marc Guillemot Second in the 60 Foot Multihull Class

Marc Guillemot passed the finish line at Pointe à Pitre at 08 hours 21min18 sec GMT, today Sunday 24 November. The skipper of Biscuits La Trinitaine-Ethypharm steals second in the multihull ORMA after 13 days 19 hours 36 minutes and 18 seconds of racing at an average speed of 12.68 knots across the water. He arrived at exactly 11 hours 43 minutes and 18 seconds behind the winner, Michel Desjoyeaux (Géant). Marc Guillemot covered 4205 nautical miles and carried out a three day pitstop in the Azores (Punta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel) to change parts of his unusable sail wardrobe (solent and staysail), and repairing damage to the forebeam.
Fourth in 1998, Marc Guillemot climbed to second in this 2002 edition of the Route du Rhum. During the pitstop in the Azores the popular skipper said ‘never again solo on a tri’, but today in Guadeloupe he revealed that he has changed his mind: “It was a great bliss, and real satisfaction. I had the feeling I fought a battle with very strong dete rmination. Something great happened inside during the race. I cannot describe the feeling, but it is a true sensation, and something I would like to discuss with the other skippers.”
The last racer reindexing in the ORMA multihull class, Lalou Roucayrol on Banque Populaire is expected to cross the finish line this afternoon local time (evening GMT). He had 57.3 miles to go at 1500 GMT. Banque Populaire is the only 60-foot trimaran in the fleet that has not carried out a pitstop. But, due to his original and misfortunate course north of the Azores, he was slowed down by the anticyclone for more than three frustrating days.
Race veteran Mike Birch is far behind his friends on the trimarans (1229 miles to the finish at 1500 GMT, ninth 60-foot monohull) and when he heard that there were only three left he was truly surprised: “Oh, I thought there were at least six left of them. I really screwed up this time, should have taken a tri...” 71-year old Mike Birch saluted his much younger colleague Ellen MacArthur “I am really happy for Ellen. She must be the best prepared. With Mark Turner and his team it is such a team thing. An example for everybody. She will be ‘Sir’d’ or whatever it could be in England!” Birch, who won the first edition of the Route du Rhum in 1978 on a small trimaran, is expected to cross the finish line on Friday 29 November.
Third placed in this class, Joé Seten on Arcelor-Dunkerque was just 192 nautical miles away from the finish line at 1500 GMT, hotly pursued by Roland Jourdain on Sill, who is still approximately 85 miles behind the chance for the last step on the podium. The second British female skipper in the Route du Rhum, Miranda Merron on UUDS, is eighth in the class, having a bit of a struggle with all the squalls signifying the Route du Rhum: “Squall after squall, UUDS is marked. I can clearly imagine how a trimaran could capsize under one of these monsters. I am a bit slow with less sails, but more safe. I learnt that in the first squall…”

Nick Moloney, Regis Guillemot and Franck-Yves Escoffier are all leading their respective classes amongst the smaller boats. At 1500 GMT Nick Moloney’s Ashfield Healthcare was 816 nautical miles from sweet victory with Flory’s still on his tail, approximately 175 miles away. This gap may yet decrease rapidly as they approach the finish. "There is a risk I'll be engulfed by some high pressure near the finish which could allow the other guys to catch up and take some miles out of me," explained Moloney yesterday.
A towboat arrived in the zone of the capsized trimaran TechnoMarine today. Stève Ravussin has spent three days on his overturned trimaran. If the conditions are good, TechnoMarine, should arrive righted in Pointe-à-Pitre on Thursday.
