Storm Passes - North Cove Back "Open for Business"
Dennis Conner's North Cove is back "Open for Business" after Hurricane Irene passed
earlier this morning.
The marina proved it's reputation as an excellent "hurricane hole" last night.
Wind gusts of 60 knots were recorded in the harbor. At North Cove however, there
was very little wind. The skyscrapers of the World Financial center and other buildings
shield the marina from northeast winds. It was a very calm and peaceful night.
The biggest issue the marina faced during the storm was the high tide. It crested
around 9 am this morning with a height of about 3.5 feet above normal high water.
The water came about 10 inches over the marina quay but the water did not get close
to the level of the upper esplanade. The height of the water was similar to what
occurs during a strong winter nor-easter.
During high water, the electricity at the marina is shut down. Two mega yachts
which rode out the storm on floating docks in the marina operated on generators
throughout the night. Two other mega yachts, which were docked along the seawalls,
headed up the Hudson River yesterday morning because of the concern about high tide
causing their fenders to rise above the breakwall. In all, there were about 40
yachts within the marina and all are fine. None were exposed to any strong winds.
The marina staff is busy this morning undoing all the extra lines, packing up the
emergency dewatering pumps and putting the garbage cans back out. The first yacht
to arrive after the storm is expected this afternoon around 4 p.m.
We express our appreciation to all those who checked in before and during the storm.
We are fine and very thankful that the storm ended up being less than it could
have been. The authorities in the city acted responsibility to get everyone's attention
focused on the storm and this certainly helped us achieve a higher level of preparation.
So if you are out boating this fall in the North East, please consider stopping
by Dennis Conner's North Cove. We'll roll out the red carpet and do our best to
give you a great New York City Welcome!
