Sailing in the city begins again!
Manhattan Sailing Club's fleet of over 30 J/24
sailboats is riding the harbor swells again. Some of the fleet is now outfitted
with new mains, genoas and jibs thanks to the sponsorship of Mount Gay Rum. Here
is one of the sailing school boats heading towards the skyline of Manhattan and
the new One World building which is almost topped out!
Manhattan Sailing Club
May2012 Newsletter
Greetings from the Commodore!
Dear Members - Happy Silver Jubilee! It is always exciting down at Manhattan Sailing
Club. For the past month, Giovanni Soldini, the great Italian adventurer, has been
keeping his boat "Maserati" at the club to try and break the trans-Atlantic Record.
Where else can you meet such talented and famous sailors as well as great chefs,
actors, business people and more. It all happens here in Manhattan. Soldini missed
the record as the weather system dissipated before he finished. But he sent me
an email afterwards saying he may try to come back in June for another attempt.
There is plenty more excitement in store for us the summer, especially with the
KRYS Ocean Race starting here on July 7. Get involved and stay tuned!
- Commodore Michael Fortenbaugh
Watch the Races Live in the Harbor!
Technology is a great friend of sailing. A boat used to head off in the distance
and you never knew where they were for weeks on end. With tracking technology,
you can follow boats on the internet. One thing we have dreamed about is broadcasting
our races live form the harbor. If you are in your office or home at 6:30 p.m.
on a race night, wouldn't it be exciting to watch the race live on the internet?
This is still a dream and if anyone can solve and fund this, we are all ears.
In the meantime, click this link below. It is live video footage of the harbor.
You can't see the start at the clubhouse, but you can see the action as the boats
sail down the harbor. It's amazing and hopefully just a sign of things to come!
Sailing School Appears on CH 11 TV with Linda Church
Linda Church is the weather woman for the morning show on WPIX CH 11 TV. And she
gets to do some great things. So last week, to help ring in the summer boating
season, she invited Manhattan Sailing School as well as some kayakers and paddleboarders
to Pier 40 for the morning show. Three great live segments appeared on TV helping
to let all New Yorkers know about the adult and junior sailing lessons as well as
the Corporate Sailing League.
Participate in the Tall Ship Parade on Wed onboard Pride of Baltimore II
This Wed morning, May 23, will be a Tall Ship Parade in New York Harbor!
The tall ships are combining with the navy vessels of Fleet Week for a busy day
of activity. Too bad it's not the traditional Tall Ship Parade on July 4th, but
it will still be a spectacle.
If you are lucky enough to have some free time on Wednesday, you can ride in the
parade aboard Tall Ship Pride of Baltimore II. They have a limited number of spots
still available and details are at link above. While Pride II is in the harbor,
she will be docking at North Cove, She is always a beautiful sight so be sure
to come down and check her out!
16th Annual Sailors Ball Kicks Off Season
Thanks you to all of the sailors who attended the 16th Annual Sailors Ball and helped
to support the New York Harbor Sailing Foundation.
Foundation Chairman Jim Cavanaugh (right) and Commodore Michael Fortenbaugh (left)
present a recognition award to USCG Sector New York. Accepting the award on behalf
of the USCG is Captain Greg Hitchen. This year, the awards featured images of "Operation
Optimist," the Foundation's popular and innovative junior sailing program in the
harbor.
Dennis Conner (center), America's most famous sailor, flew in from San Diego for
the Sailors Ball again this year. This is the 25th anniversary of Dennis' incredible
comeback win when he recaptured the Americas' Cup down in Australia. The Moet &
Chandon dinner before the ball featured video of the four races in which Conner
swept the Australians to make history on the cover of Time Magazine!
About 600 people attended the Sailors Ball this year, making it one of the largest
annual gathering of sailors in the city.
A new room at the ball this year was the Hinckley Model Room. It proved to be popular
and crowded throughout the evening. Other ball sponsors included Mt Gay Rum, Heineken
Beer, Macallan Single Malt, Zubrowka Bison Grass Vodka, metaxa and St Remy Brandy.
Midnight in the Heineken Boom Boom Room is when the Sailors Ball really takes off!
Be sure to put the ball on your social schedule for next April!
17 Teams Now Confirmed for Dennis Conner International Yacht Club Challenge
Seventeen teams have already entered the 5th Dennis Conner International Yacht Club
Challenge will take place August 17, 18 & 19. Italy, Japan, Australia, Scotland,
Germany, Canada, Bermuda & Denmark are fielding teams. Now the question will be
- which club will end up "Top of the World!" No club has ever won the Challenge
twice. More details are at http://www.myc.org/iycc/default.htm
Be sure to keep your schedule clear and be in NYC during this event. \There will
be lots of opportunities to meet the foreign sailors and celebrate the sport of
sailing.
How has the club changed over the years?
Every year, little by little, the club itself is getting more well organized by
different committees. I can't believe that I've been sailing here for almost 25
years.
What is your favorite memory of the club?
Club trip to Barbados in 1994.
What is the funniest thing which has happened to you as a member?
I used to pick up school chairs on the water during the sail. One time, a sea plane
also landed right next to my boat- what a sight to see!
The following sailors have joined the Club during our Silver Jubilee Season. If
you meet them at the docks or clubhouse, be sure to offer them congratulations
and big "Welcome Aboard!"
