Dear Members - Spring is in the air and we will be painting the J/24 bottoms this weekend. Our sailing season is just over 4 weeks away. Lots of great things are happening for our Silver Jubilee season. Moet & Chandon has signed on as the Flagship sponsor. What a great way to celebrate! And there will be an America's Cup event in Newport at the end of June. Maybe America II will travel there to serve as a spectator boat. Keep an eye out of the announcement. Start the season out right. Please buy a ticket to the Sailors Ball which will be Friday, April 27. Then tell all of your friends as well. This is an important fundraiser for our Foundation and also the best black tie party of the year. With our club turning 25 this summer, we have some great history. Read the interview with our new Member #1 below. And we already have teams signed up for the Dennis Conner International Yacht Club Challenge in August. Make sure you are in town so you can participate as well.

Photo: March is too early for "America II" to be in the water but that didn't stop the Moet & Chandon team led by Ludovic de Plessis (center) from coming down to the clubhouse to learn more about the spirit of sailing. They brought wit them an incredible bottle emblazoned with the club logo. This will be a new piece of club history for display on the clubhouse!

Only One Spot Left in Sail Patrol
Are you an experienced skipper and would you like to sail for free? The Club is looking for volunteers to become members of a "Sail Patrol." The Sail Patrol concept is borrowed from the ski industry. Experienced skiers volunteer their time to serve on a "Ski Patrol." In return, they get to ski for free. Our club is adopting this concept to sailing and we will invite 10 sailors to join the first "Sail Patrol." To qualify, you need to be an excellent skipper and educator. Members of the Sail Patrol will be able to skipper boats as part of the club's Fleet Captain Program. This is a free educational program which provides training and experience to crew. Just like in skiing, there will be responsibilities and limitations for the "Sail Patrol."
The website www.myc.org has more details under the Fleet Captain page. Sailors who wish to join the Sail Patrol will be interviewed by the club membership director. If accepted, you will be given an orientation to the boats as well as a series of standards and expectations. Your mission will be to ensure club standards are followed and train others about these expectations. Nine out of the ten spots have already been allocated for this season. Congratulations to these members of the Sail Patrol:

Member Spotlight Member #1 - Lorraine Aronowitz & Robert Danzig
This first member ever to join Manhattan Sailing Club was Gazi Alkaya. Gazi retired from the club in the mid-1990s. The Member #1 title was then given to Dr. David Korris. Dr. Korris retired last year at the age of 90 and our Club's new Member #1 is Lorraine Aronowitz & Robert Danzig. Bomer interviewed Lorraine below:

Bomer: Do you remember when you first joined the club and what caused you to join?
Lorraine: I learned to sail at Cornell and when I moved to New York City, I wanted to continue spending time out on the water. I went down for a celebration at the South Street Seaport and saw Michael sitting at a table. When I went to speak with him, he was so enthusiastic about having a sailing club in the city of New York and I thought it was a great idea- sailing in the harbor. Fantastic! Needless to say, I signed up right away!

Bomer: Do you remember your first sail in the harbor and what was it like?
Lorraine: When I first joined the club, I was young and single which allowed me to make it down for 9 a.m. sails on Saturdays. Now it's hard to believe that I got down there so early! I remember that one of my first impressions of the club was that it was so social and how friendly all of the members were. As a group we even went and grabbed lunch together after the sails. Regardless of skill level, everybody wanted to be a part of the club and had so much fun being involved. Sailing in this city is such a unique experience, so different than anywhere else. Having to dodge ferries, bridges and water taxis, it really helps a sailor to develop a special skill level to sail in the harbor. Members like Jon Overton are really what make this club so great. Jon became a good friend to both Rob and I and we have so many good memories of sailing with him. Whenever he had a spare minute, he would call and ask us to go out on sails and really helped to put anyone on his boat at ease by providing good tips and taking the time to explain specifics about the harbor. To compensate him for his time, I was always in charge of bringing sandwiches out for the sails!

Bomer: What was it like sailing out of the South Street Seaport?
Lorraine: While South Street Seaport was a great start for the club, it's not as nice as sailing out of North Cove. Since the club sailboats were wedged in between these big boats, it always felt a little crowded and not as convivial as the North Cove is today. Today, the North Cove has a more much relaxed feel.

Bomer: How has the club changed over the years?
Lorraine: One of the main things that has changed is that our facilities are so much better and that the North Cove really feels like ours; like it was meant to have our sailing club inside of it. Having that feeling that it's our place makes sailing on the Hudson extremely pleasant, as you get the beautiful views when you get out on the water, but then when you come back in, you know there will always be familiar faces awaiting your return and catching up on the docks when you come back in. This area in particular is really conducive to healthy outdoor activity too. There's always people coming and going: bicyclists, running, curious tourists, sailors. I think the North Cove fits the vision of the club so well. The MSC also really displays that we do live on an island and is a wonderful outlet for new Yorkers who are provincial. The club puts sailing at your fingertips and allows members to be participatory of the water history of the city. This club really shows that NY harbor can be a home for pleasure craft and by putting sailing at your fingertips, it really makes sailing easily accessible for everyone in the city. When someone mentions the MSC, they smile because they know it's something special that the city has.

Bomer: What is your favorite memory of the club?
Lorraine: I love hearing the sound of the canon shooting at the beginning of the season to signify that start of another great summer sailing on the Hudson. It's one of those little delightful touches of the club.

Bomer: What is the funniest thing which has happened to you as a member?
Lorraine: I had a friend visiting from abroad in late October and he wanted to go out onto the water. A club member invited to take me out sailing and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make it happen. Being late October, however, it was blustery, cold and the wind was so strong. There's certainly something to be said for sailing at the end of the season when it's really cold. I remember thinking, "This is it...the most wild experience. Who's going to call my mother and tell her what has happened?" Those couple hours were a really challenge, but my friend and the skipper had a great time. When we were done for the day, the skipper asked, "Want to go out tomorrow?" I also remember there being a dachshund with its own life preserver and thinking that was really cute!
